Theme and Description An opportunity for children to learn about the religious values and commitment of the men and women who helped spread Universalism throughout the North American continent.

Goals for Participants

To rediscover elements of Universalist heritage that enhance contemporary Unitarian Universalism
To appreciate the Universalist past and reinterpret its meaning for today's global village
To affirm Universalism as a religion for today.

Age Range Ages 8 to 10

Space Requirements An inviting, attractive space; "a home place" for the children

Number of Sessions 15

Length of Sessions 1 hour (can be expanded with optional activities)

Leader Training Co-leaders recommended, with several resource people to enrich the program. Someone comfortable in leading songs is a plus.

Leader Preparation 2 to 3 hours per session

Strengths

Addresses a clear need for Universalist history
Includes well-structured, detailed lesson plans
Includes guidelines for including your congregation's Universalist history
Uses imaginative activities and songs
Offers a very good leader introduction
Optional activities provide choices or enrichment.

Limitations

Requires somewhat time-consuming gathering of materials and resources
Each session is based on a story from 18th- to early 20th-century history. Children may need help relating to and being engaged with these time periods.

Adaptability

The number of sessions can be expanded with optional activities
Can be a resource on Universalism for other ages and programs.

Unitarian Universalist Values Particularly affirms the Universalist values and principles that contribute to contemporary Unitarian Universalism.
