Theme and Description: The CHARTING SELF curriculum is an 8-session adult religious education course which invites participants to explore changes in their religious beliefs in the context of changes in their most important relationships. The course uses the BELIEFS CHART to help participants think about beliefs in a new way, and to consider whether any of their religious beliefs have been attractive primarily due to their "relationship function." The course also offers participants approaches to framing a religious stance grounded in "basic self" and available as a more dependable resource in fashioning a steady life course. The course draws upon the family systems theory of Dr. Murray Bowen, a pioneer in family therapy. The course manual includes lesson plans and everything needed by each participant: class readings, sample BELIEF CHARTS, worksheets, and ideas for continuing work with the BELIEFS CHART.
