REsources: Tips for Teachers |
|---|
Ages: all!
Tip:
I have often taught the class with most of our hyperactive children and young people. I have learned that the best way to get them and keep them occupied and involved is to put an activity into their hands as soon as they step into the classroom. I try to have an activity already begun with supplies and materials out and available. As they come into the room, I hand them a pair of scissors, for example, and some blanks for cutting, or some other such prepared activity. As class goes on, they don't seem to be paying attention as they work on their project, but they are, closely, and when there is a break in the story or lesson they bubble over with impressions, comments and questions.
Ages: all
Tip:
If the curriculum you're using doesn't include it, it is good to start the year off with a discussion of class rules. Review the UU principles (it is written in children's language in several curricula, including "We Believe") and have them help decide what classroom rules would go along with the principles. They will more readily buy into the rules if they help create them. Then post these rules all year long, using them as a reminder when needed.
