Description:
Heresy Apparent is a 10-session religious education curriculum developed to expose youth to the rich and interesting history of Unitarianism and Universalism that is their religious heritage. The purpose of Heresy Apparent is to provide a fun and educational experience for junior high and/or high school youth either in a Unitarian U niversalist church, a week-long summer camp, or a weekend youth conference setting. In the latter, this program can serve as a "con in a can," for a district to use as a pre-packaged youth conference, or as a Coming of Age-themed experience.

The goals of Heresy Apparent are to provide youth with:
-- an opportunity to learn about the theological and historical roots of Unitarian Universalism as well as the lives and accomplishments of famous adherents of Unitarian and Universalist principles;
-- an environment that encourages individual initiative as well as teamwork in pursuit of multiple goals;
-- exposure to tasks and activities that will encourage them to think about their own religious beliefs and will promote their own spiritual growth;
-- a chance to stretch their own boundaries in a safe and supportive environment;
-- fun gaming experience where cooperation is as important as competition; and
-- experience facing the challenges to communication and understanding in large group learning and discussion.

The curriculum presents Unitarian Universalist history in the context of the perceived heresies inherent in Unitarian and Universalist theologies. The sessions include:

Session 1: The Nature of God (pre-1800) ? Heresy of Anti-Trinitarianism
Session 2: The Nature of God (pre-1800) ? Heresy of Universal Salvation
Session 3: Liberal Christianity (1800-1900) ? Heresy of Religious Questioning
Session 4: Liberal Christianity (1800-1900) ? Heresy of Faith in Action
Session 5: Freethought and New Ideas (1900-1950) ? Heresy of Reason
Session 6: Freethought and New Ideas (1900-1950) ? Heresy of Resistance
Session 7: Diverse Voices (1950-2000) ? Heresy of Nondiscrimination
Session 8: Diverse Voices (1950-2000) ? Heresy of Inclusion
Session 9: Future of Unitarian Universalism (after 2000) ? Heresy of Challenging Assumptions
Session 10: Future of Unitarian Universalism (after 2000) ? Heresy of the Questing Mind

Heresy Apparent comes with cards for almost 90 famous Unitarian Universalists, with pictures and brief biographies. Extra copies of the curriculum can also be ordered.
