Description:
CHARTING SELF: A BELIEFS CHART CURRICULUM FOR ADULTS is an 8-session adult religious education course which invites participants to explore changes in their religious beliefs in the context of changes in their most important relationships. The course uses the BELIEFS CHART to help participants think about beliefs in a new way, and to consider whether any of their religious beliefs have been attractive primarily due to their "relationship function." The course also offers participants approaches to framing a religious stance grounded in "basic self" and available as a more dependable resource in fashioning a steady life course. The course draws upon the family systems theory of Dr. Murray Bowen, a pioneer in family therapy. This course manual includes class readings, lesson plans, worksheets, and ideas for continuing work with the BELIEFS CHART.

Description:
"Super Heroes" is a values-based curriculum that has the following goals: 1) To introduce children to stories of people from the Bible who have acted with courage and wisdom in their attempts to lead their lives fully and make the world a better place for others; 2) To show how the lives of these people confirm the principles which we, as Unitarian Universalists, strive to promote; and 3) To encourage the children to lead their own lives fully and to use their own positive "super powers" as they interact with the world around them, and as they do so, to grow both ethically and spiritually. Nineteen lessons include Moses, David, Solomon, Elijah, Joseph, "Christmas People," Jesus the Traveling Teacher, and Esther.
The curriculum is self-contained (no additional resources to buy) and comes with a CD of the theme song. A "cookbook" format educates the teacher. Each lesson is written to engage multiple intelligences and contains a full page picture-home link and a fully crafted story that leads to dramatic play, games, and art acitivities.

Rainbow colored notepads with the Animal UU Principles!!!!! Each simplified UU Principle is associated with an animal, number and color of the rainbow. For example, the First Principle is represented by the Cardinal (with one topknot on his head), the color red (first color of rainbow) and is stated as "The First rule is EVERYONE is important!" The lesson plan that I'll send along with it suggests that you put one hand on top of your head, topknot like and say in a bird voice "Everyone is important!" The fourth principle is represented by a frog (with four legs), the color green (4th in the rainbow) and is stated as "Hop to it! We are free to search for the truth" A suggested movement (my son's favorite) is to hop around on our four "legs" like frogs while reciting the principle. The notepads are $2.25 each, postpaid 5 for $10 Please mention the lesson plan when ordering if you would like one. Children explore the ways that specific living things relate to the rest of
life -- what the earthworm eats, what eats it, what it contributes to the soil,
how that helps plants and helps us who grow food in that soil. Concepts come
to life through direct experience. Throughout the curriculum, our spiritual
connection with all living things is brought out. A closing ritual at the end
of each session helps the children internalize their learning, sometimes with
a story that summarizes the day's experience.

Comes with a Teacher Manual, Teacher Resource book,
and student text. It's probably more involved than most
UU R.E. programs would want to tackle, but could be adapted.
We used it as a resource a few years ago when we designed our own
class on Jewish and Christian scriptures and religions for a junior high
class.
We'll be doing that again next year. If it goes well, I will consider trying
to get our program published.

This next year the theme for our R.E. program is Jewish and Christian
heritage, with an emphasis on the Bible. The K-1st grade class will be using
"Special Times," and our preschool class will be using selected sessions
from above Winston programs.
Each is designed for a mainstream Christian setting, but can be adapted to
a UU program (e.g., instead of doing the weekly prayer, do a chalice-lighting).
Each self-contained session focuses on a typical preschool theme and
has a Bible story to illustrate it (told in children's language), along with
craft and other activities.

This 10-session program is part of a larger Christian discipleship program called "Faith for Life." When we used this several years ago we didn't have any trouble adaptating it for our group. Both the youth and the teachers liked it.
I have no idea if it's still available; don't have a phone# to call.

"Weaving the Fabric of Diversity"
We are about half way through the Weaving curriculum. I am one of the facilitators. On one hand I am tempted to say its a "diversity 101" survey course, but on the other I would say it is a very important thing to do. Most poeple have no idea what it is like in someone else's shoes and this course provides a lot of shoes. The one warning I would give you is that you will feel like you are preaching to the choir. You know darn well that the people that need it most will never take the class. Do it anyway. And talk it up in church. There seems to be some sort of osmosis of ideas.
I went through the welcoming congregation process at another church and sure enough we never saw the people we wanted there. But we talked about it incessantly and when we had our vote to become a welcoming congregation we had a lot of very pleasant surprises.
It is very important that the people that participate let everyone know how they are growing in the class. Can I stress this enough? Something has to come out of the class. The participants have to spread the word.
