What worked best with my Jr. Highers last year is having an arts project, during which we would talk. Some of the resulting conversations were awesome -- and initiated by the youth! We used You, the Creator [to see a description click here] , with massive adaptions; basically picking and choosing projects that we thought were feasible, and removing much of the planned conversation and replacing it with less programmed conversation time. We made these adaptions because that is what worked well with our group. We did You, the Creator once or twice a month, party or outing once a month, and planning time/other once a month. Every day started with a chalice lighting, reading, and check-in.
This year we have a different group in many ways. We have a lot more active energy, and less interest in arts and crafts. Instead we've tried to do more one-time events and had three youth and my co-advisor attend an LDC. We're going on a snow trip, having an overnight at church, going camping, and many youth are attending YRUU conferences in the district. We're trying to get more youth leadership happening, and it is working. Youth have initiated and led conversations about making our group work better. This year we're doing a social action project, emphasizing economic injustice and how we can each make a change in the world around us. My co-teacher and I have skimmed through a few social-action Jr. High curriculum, and are adapting them much as we adapted the curriculum last year. I hope that youth will lead sections of curriculum and discussion.
